Barclay R. Brown, whose legacy inspires the Foundation’s mission

Barclay’s Legacy

Dr. Barclay R. Brown was a systems thinker, technologist, educator, author and mentor whose life was defined by curiosity, integrity and a rare ability to connect the technical with the human.

His work advanced systems engineering, artificial intelligence, quality management and professional education. His influence reached across universities, industry, professional societies, research communities and the many people he taught, encouraged and inspired.

The Barclay R. Brown Foundation exists to honor that legacy and carry it forward through learning, innovation, scholarships, community and support for the next generation of systems thinkers.

A Life of Curiosity, Purpose and Connection

Barclay believed deeply in progress, but never progress for its own sake. He believed knowledge should be used with ethics, humanity and a sense of responsibility to the greater good.

He was both brilliant and generous, exacting and encouraging, deeply technical and deeply human. Whether he was teaching a course, mentoring a colleague, leading a working group or guiding a complex idea forward, Barclay had a gift for helping others see what was possible.

He asked better questions. He challenged people to think more clearly. He connected ideas across disciplines. And he helped others grow into stronger thinkers, leaders and contributors.

The Human Behind the Work

Before the titles, achievements and professional contributions, Barclay was remembered for who he was as a person.

He was curious, thoughtful, witty, principled and endlessly interested in how things worked. He loved science, learning, building, cycling, conversation and the life he shared with his wife, Honor, on the coast of Georgia.

He brought the same spirit to his personal life that he brought to his professional work: a desire to understand, improve, connect and create. He could move easily from technical insight to philosophy, from systems engineering to literature, from artificial intelligence to Rumi, Star Trek, Joseph Campbell or Jung.

People remember Barclay not only for what he knew, but for how he shared it. He was generous with his time, his ideas and his encouragement. He helped others move past mental bottlenecks, see new possibilities and believe in their own capacity to learn.

His influence lives on in the people he mentored, the students he taught, the colleagues he challenged and the communities he helped strengthen.

A Life in Motion

Barclay brought the same curiosity and determination to life that he brought to his work. He was happiest when he was learning, exploring and challenging himself to try something new, whether cycling long distances, inline skating, traveling or simply enjoying time with the people he loved.

These moments reflect a life lived with energy, humor and wholehearted engagement. Barclay did not stand still for long. He embraced challenges, found joy in discovery and brought a genuine sense of connection to every experience.

A Life of Technical Innovation, Leadership and Service

Dr. Brown’s professional life reflected a rare combination of technical depth, entrepreneurial thinking, disciplined systems practice and generous mentorship.

His fascination with computing began early. He learned, taught and wrote code while still young, and his undergraduate work in Electrical Engineering focused on the emerging field of computer engineering. Over the course of his career, he helped advance software innovation, systems engineering, model-based systems engineering, artificial intelligence and quality-focused education.

His work included leadership roles at Digital Equipment Corporation, IBM, Raytheon and Collins Aerospace, where he served as a Senior Technical Fellow and Associate Director for AI Research. He also contributed to work with NASA on Generative AI technologies for Systems Engineering.

Dr. Brown held a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, master’s degrees in Psychology and Business and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering. He was an INCOSE Certified Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) and the author of Engineering Intelligent Systems, published by Wiley in 2022.

Across every role, Dr. Brown brought the same purpose to the work: helping people understand complexity, ask better questions and build systems with clarity, responsibility and care.

Advancing Systems Thinking for a More Complex World

Dr. Brown believed complexity was not something to avoid. It was something to understand, organize and approach with clarity.

His work helped people see systems more fully: the technical structures, the human decisions, the relationships between disciplines and the long-term consequences of what we build. He encouraged others to think beyond isolated problems and consider how ideas, people, processes and technologies connect.

That belief shaped his teaching, mentoring, leadership and writing. Whether he was guiding a team, supporting a working group, advising colleagues or helping students understand a difficult concept, Dr. Brown brought structure to complexity and confidence to the people working through it.

Through INCOSE and other professional communities, he helped advance conversations around systems engineering, artificial intelligence, quality management, model-based systems engineering and the role of systems thinking in solving complex problems.

Dr. Brown understood that better systems require more than technical expertise. They require judgment, collaboration, ethics, imagination and people who can think across boundaries. The foundation carries that understanding forward through education, scholarships, research support, professional development and community programs that connect knowledge to what’s next.

Why His Work Continues

The Barclay R. Brown Foundation was created to continue the work Barclay cared about most: advancing education, encouraging innovation, supporting systems thinking and helping people approach complex problems with clarity and purpose.

Through scholarships, grants, learning opportunities, research support, professional participation and community programs, the Foundation helps extend Barclay’s impact into the future.

Its purpose is not only to preserve what Barclay accomplished, but to activate it. To support students, educators, engineers, researchers, emerging professionals and leaders who are learning to think across disciplines, ask better questions and apply systems thinking to meaningful work.

Barclay believed the future needed people who could connect knowledge, ideas and communities in new ways. The Foundation carries that belief forward.

The Values That Carry His Work Forward

The Foundation carries forward the values that shaped Barclay’s life, work and influence across systems engineering, education, innovation and mentorship.
